One would probably have to get deeper into the Britannical weeds than I did to fully appreciate the ornate quality of the plotline, but several of the characters and performers make their presence felt early on-most entertainingly, Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

The female characters are fantastically strong, from Zoë Wanamaker's blood-curdling Queen Antedia to indomitable princess Kerra, played by Kelly Reilly like someone with the sun permanently in her eyes.

You can see why they cast [David] Morrissey, because if anyone can remain stony-faced while all around him are having drug-fuelled orgies, paying visits to the Underworld or dismembering corpses at a mini-Stonehenge, it is he.

It's madder than a box of frogs, and perhaps more like a crazed fever dream -- a fever dream that mashes up Game Of Thrones with Horrible Histories, and that's the closest I can get.

Seriously, this series - whose creators include Jez Butterworth, a co-screenwriter of the Whitey Bulger drama "Black Mass" - is a fabulous, stupid mess.

It was like being at a very muddy rock festival with added eye gougings and throat slittings.

Yes, there's plenty of action and enough gore in this vaguely historical drama to quench your fix for Game of Thrones.

Britannia, which is weird and druggy and at times howling mad, is rather funny. It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a bit of a riot. You might not expect that of something that has extreme violence as its meat.

It behoves me to say quite firmly that Britannia is the barmiest thing I've seen on TV since just about forever.

This is Game of Thrones written by depressed hobbits.
